Happiness is a state of being happy. Everyone is looking for happiness. According to Alan De Botton, happiness is tricky. Therefore, firstly let examine, what is the definition of happy? Happy is a feeling or showing pleasure and satisfaction. What are the ingredients of happiness? According to Epicurus, the three major ingredients that add to our happiness are: 1. Based on my life experience, I don’t think happiness source do not come in hand naturally. It requires great effort and dedication. For example, on my mum birthday date, I will have to make several arrangements e.g. call my brother and sisters to remind of the date; plan myself to buy her presents before the birthday date, plan ahead the day that we can get together to celebrate mum birthday. Therefore, I can say that happiness do require careful planning, efforts and dedication. Friendship is part of happiness. It is important to define and categorize what is friend? According to Longman contemporary dictionary, friend is who share same interests, feeling and understandable.
For myself, friendship can be classified into the following categorize: best-mate (share secret, know your weakness and strength and vice versa, no criticism, can say whatever you want), colleague (study and work together), religious friend (share same belief and ideas). I believe friend in need is a friend indeed. Freedom is part of happiness. What is freedom? It means being free; right or power to do as pleases; unrestricted use; honorary citizenship. How much freedom require to be a happiness person? According to Epicure, freedom is part of happiness source, it requires that we must be financially independence. It means that we must stand on our two feet for our life and not influence by judgment and politic issues.
Reflection is part of happiness. In my opinion, Life is an adventure place to explore; it is up and down the hills. To learn from our successful and failure action, we must re-focus, engagement, to sit down to reflect what we were doing today? Which action and words is bad/good? It is to cultivate what is good and to learn from our own mistakes. It is important to clarify the issue and deeply understand the result of it. Does it mean a person with a lot of $ money (wealthy) will gain more happiness than poor person? Well, money is essential for our everyday life. However, there are not enough evidence to support that wealthy person is happier than poor person. Wealthy person has more chance in pursue what they need than poor. However, it is depend on us to control and use money wisely according to our needs for living e.g. food and services need. It is called self-sufficient. Finally, in my understanding to be fully happiness person, It is essential to have the three qualities: Family and Friends; Freedom and Reflection of yourself. It does not require a lot of money to come to this stage of happiness. However, it does require great efforts, enthusiastic, engagement and dedication.
